an introduction, of sorts

i suppose i should explain the title of this. it comes from a conversation i had with a good friend a while ago about the way i live my life. at some point in the conversation he labeled me [or perhaps i labeled myself?] as 'always moving forward' - unlike, according to him, a good portion of the population.

i disagree, actually - i think everyone is moving forward. moving forward is just what we do - until time machines [teleporters?] become a standard fixture in our lives, there's no other direction to move in. so i don't think my own moving forward is all that unusual.

but there is a broader aspect to this 'always moving forward' business. in my work, as in my life generally, i am always moving forward - and making the attempt, successful or not, to try to ensure that the way the world moves forward is positive. i'm a progressive - progress being, as i see it, synonymous to moving forward. i suppose in that way i'm actually making a conscious effort to do what a lot of the world does not.

still, i don't think i'm all that unusual. but the connotation seems to have stuck. so, there you go...
